i have natural dark brown hair and i colored it auburn.

i want it back brown. will it be damaging?

Dying is always a little bit damaging to the hair, but its nothing a bit of deep conditiong can't sort out.

Dying the hair darker is better though, The colour will take faster to a darker colour rather than a lighter one as with using a lighter dye you need to keep it on longer and its not always the result you wished for.

It will be ok if you do this. I thought (by your question) that you wanted to go blonde! this obviously involves bleaching, and will cause a lot of damage to hair. But brown will be ok.

Coloring your hair is always damaging, and yes it is less damaging to go darker than it is lighter becaue of the amount of peroxide in the lighter colors. Just make sure to use a good color shampoo and conditioner on your hair and try to do weekly conditioning treatments on your hair to keep in in the best shape possible. You'll be fine. I color my hair all the time and it still look and feels great.
