When Coloring Hair, Which should you do first?

When you lighten your hair, should you dye it first to lighten then bleach with highlights? or the other way around?

When I had my hair done (my hair is black, but I wanted a blond highlight) my stylist lighten my hair to a mocha brown and then did the highlights. She said this was so she could tell how light the highlights needed to be to get what I wanted.

The other way around

lighten hair up then do highlights, I have a friend that did not color her, What she did was get high lights ever four week by the end of the year her hair was amazingly beautifully and light

1. Make sure Your hair is in good condition. Give it a good conditioning a few days before. Peroxide is a *****!

2. How dark is Your hair?

3. If You have black hair, You will have to have it processed(take all the color out)

4. Nice N'easy and L'Oreal have wonderful shades.

5. Dye first with intended shade, then use a streaking method

It's easy. Go to a salon. They do it for you.

First you should bleach it wherever you want the highlights, but make sure you keep an eye on it. Once it is as light as you want it you can leave it or put a toner over it to make the color more vibrant. While the bleach is in, you can color the rest of your hair so you can rinse it all at once.

Catnipgirl is right. It does depend on how dark your hair is before you dye it. But the good news? They have dyes now that can lighten your hair before you do anything else to it. If you decide to highlight then dye, the highlight is going to be dyed an even light shade later (obviously); but if you dye a shade light, then highlight, the only shade the highlights will be is close to what you were aiming for.

Depends on your natural hair color, but lightening your hair and then highlights will damage it beyond repair. Sure you can use products to make it look good but it will still be damaged. You should do gradual highlights in several processes, instead of damaging your hair with a double process. As your hair gets lighter from highlights, then you will do highlights and low lights at the same time to give it a several shades. After highlights go to Sally's Beauty Supply and buy a product by Apogee. You want the repair serum it is in a white and purple bottle and the conditioner to go with it. You apply it to washed hair and then blow dry, it smells and hardens on your head, then you rinse and apply the conditioner, this will make your hair feel brand new and healthy for 6 weeks. It is good for anyone who highlights their hair. Good Luck
